GIS SPOTLIGHT
SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM
Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is now offering a FREE summer program to fasttrack new students into a GIS profession with a degree in Geographic Information Science (GISc). In this free program, students will take the first course in the GISc major and receive a math refresher course to help brush up on the math skills necessary to succeed in GISc or another STEM major
The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Geographic Information Science (GISc) program at BMCC is designed to teach students the theory and applications of GIS and to provide students with a level of proficiency in essential skills needed to prepare them for transfer to a four-year college, as well as success in pursing an entry-level position in GIS fields.

Since the curriculum is developed closely with industry advisors, graduates are equipped with the competence and skills for entry-level positions.
Geographic Information System (GIS)

Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to capture, manage, analyze, and display spatial information. Modern GIS has found its way into our daily lives, used in devices ranging from smartphones to automobiles. GIS is used to determine location and direction of travel in applications such as Yahoo Maps and Google Earth as well as in global positioning system (GPS) devices. Many businesses, local governments, and scientific organizations currently utilize GIS to enhance their productivity and efficiency, and businesses also use GIS to improve their ability to compete in the marketplace.
TRANSFERRING

With an articulation agreement in place, this curriculum facilitates transfer to a senior college, such as Hunter College, with 60 credits towards the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Geography with a concentration in GISc. The program offers invaluable internship opportunities in a variety of public and private sectors to prepare students for GIS-based career development.
